The project 'relativitimepieces' was made for the exhibition 'Matter of time' by Dutch Invertuals. The exhibition involved 600-year-old wood; oak wood which once served as the foundation for the Eindhoven city entrance.

Through experiments and research, the participating designers have translated the value and symbolism of the 600 year oak wood into contemporary design projects. Especially the concept of time and the aesthetics of the material are used as a source of inspiration.

Studio Mieke Meijer used the experience of time as a starting point for her project. We don’t experience time as an equal passing event. Sometimes, time appears to pass slower or faster. Since time seems to rule over us nowadays, I designed three ‘relativitimepieces’, objects that show a certain period of time. Not hours or minutes determine what time it is, but volume, weight and temperature. The pieces intrigue, keep your attention and before you know it is much later that you would expect…The wood has been revised by old crafting techniques, its transience is visualized, it is getting a second life as a foundation and it is transformed into time pieces, sound images, interaction instruments and sensorial objects.
